Appliances (Off-Grid Projects)

The page is used to define electricity consumption for off-grid projects based on individual electrical appliances.

Purpose of This Tab

The Appliances page is used for off-grid and isolated systems where electricity demand must be calculated from the ground up. Instead of using monthly utility bills, users define consumption by specifying which appliances are used, how often they run, and how much power they consume.

This approach ensures accurate sizing of PV modules, batteries, and inverters for systems without grid connection.

Please note: This page is used to calculate the total consumption for an off-grid project. After calculating the values here, go back to the Energy Consumption page and enter all consumption items there to ensure they are reflected in the feasibility analysis.

What You Can Do Here

On this page, you can:

  • Add electrical appliances one by one according to usage

  • Select a preset appliance scenario for common off-grid use cases

  • Define appliance count, daily usage hours, and nominal power

  • View total daily and monthly energy consumption automatically

  • Reset appliance lists and start over when needed

Adding an Appliance

To add a new appliance:

  1. Click Add New Item

  2. Select a Category

  3. Select or enter an Item

  4. Define Count, Usage, and Nominal Power

The system calculates consumption automatically.

Category

The Category groups appliances by type, such as:

  • Lighting and Electronics

  • Kitchen Appliances

  • Communication Equipment

  • Medical Devices

  • Industrial Equipment

  • Other

Categories help organize appliances and simplify data entry.

Item

The Item represents the specific appliance.

You can:

  • Select from predefined appliances (e.g., LED TV, Washing Machine, Refrigerator)

  • Enter a custom item name when needed

Predefined items come with typical nominal power values, which can be adjusted.

Count

Defines how many identical appliances are used (e.g., 5 LED lights, 2 laptops, 1 washing machine).

The total consumption is multiplied by this value.

Usage (Hours per Day)

Defines how many hours per day the appliance is used.

Usage is entered in hours per day (h/day).

circle-info

This value is critical for:

  • Daily energy demand

  • Battery sizing

  • Autonomy calculations

Nominal Power

Defines the rated power of the appliance in Watts (W).

This can be:

  • Auto-filled from predefined items

  • Manually adjusted to match actual equipment specifications

circle-info

This value represents the average operating power, not peak or startup power.

Consumption

Consumption is calculated automatically using the formula:

Values are displayed as:

  • Wh/day per appliance

circle-info

This value is calculated automatically and cannot be edited manually.

Total Consumption

At the bottom of the table, solarVis displays:

  • Total kWh/day

  • Total kWh/month

The values update instantly as appliances are added or modified.

circle-info

These totals are used directly in:

  • Battery capacity calculations

  • Inverter sizing

  • Off-grid feasibility analysis

Presets

The Select a Preset dropdown allows users to quickly load predefined appliance sets for common use cases, such as:

  • Residential

  • Caravans and RVs

  • Camping Sites

  • Agricultural Applications

  • Outdoor Events

  • Remote Medical Facilities

  • Construction and Worksites

  • Disaster Relief Shelters

  • Research Stations

  • Military or Defense Camps

  • Portable Offices

  • Remote Education Facilities

When a preset is selected, solarVis automatically adds a predefined set of appliances with typical usage assumptions. These values can be modified, removed, or extended after selection.

Reset

The Reset button clears all appliances from the list and resets total consumption values to zero.

This is useful when changing the system concept or starting a new appliance configuration.
